Each day the bacteria in your mouth, and acidic foods and drinks can microscopically erode the densely packed mineral crystals that make up your tooth enamel. This process known as demineralization can eventually weaken tooth enamel and increase your chances of developing sensitivity and tooth decay problems.

Low dose exposure to fluoride helps to add mineral integrity back the tooth enamel in a process known as remineralization. Strong tooth enamel and reduces your chances of developing issues with sensitivity and tooth decay.

If Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz sees signs of demineralization, tooth decay, or you have been suffering from tooth sensitivity, he might recommend a basic fluoride treatment.

A fluoride treatment is relatively quick. Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz can usually administer it right after he finishes your dental checkup.

During the fluoride treatment, Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz pours a concentrated fluoride gel into trays that are inserted into your mouth and held there for a few minutes. Afterward you will need to avoid eating or drinking to allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate the enamel of your teeth.

Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz might also prescribe a fluoride supplement. The supplement might be sublingual tabs, placed under the tongue or a concentrated fluoride gel and mouth rinse.
