The enamel layer on each of your teeth is composed of dense microscopic mineral crystal structures that give your teeth the strength and durability to bite off and grind food. Each day things like acidic foods and beverages, as well as the natural processes of the bacteria in your mouth, can slowly erode these microscopic structures.

This process, known as demineralization, can slowly start to weaken your tooth enamel, making your teeth more prone to problems with tooth decay and sensitivity. Regular exposure to fluoride helps to fortify and restore the mineral structures of tooth enamel on a microscopic level. This process, known as remineralization, strengthens tooth enamel and reduces your chances of sensitivity and tooth decay problems.

If you don’t have sufficient fluoride exposure in your average day, or you have issues with tooth sensitivity and tooth decay, then Dr. Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz might suggest a basic fluoride treatment or using fluoride supplements.

There are a few different types of fluoride supplements, such as sublingual tabs, gels, mouth rinse, or a concentrated fluoride toothpaste.

Prescription fluoride supplements that are meant to be ingested must be taken at the appropriate times to be truly effective. Should Dr. Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz prescribe a fluoride toothpaste or mouth rinse, it’s best to apply them to your teeth right before going to sleep, or at a time when you can avoid eating or drinking for at least an hour. This will allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate the microscopic areas of your tooth enamel.

If you have questions about fluoride treatments or fluoride supplements, you should call Dr. Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz at 818-558-4332 to schedule an appointment.
