Taking care of your mouth doesn’t have to be an inconvenience–but NOT taking care of your mouth regularly can lead to tooth erosion, cavities, gum disease, and other dental emergencies! To prevent the expense, discomfort, and annoyance of these dental problems, make sure your daily oral health routines are in good shape.

Brush Your Teeth: Brushing your teeth and gums is a very important part of your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. Use gentle pressure and short, back-and-forth strokes. This scrapes plaque and debris away from teeth and helps keep them bright and clean, without damaging enamel and gum tissue.

Floss: Flossing is just as important as brushing. It removes the plaque and debris from between the teeth that brushing can’t get to. Use single filament floss to reduce breakage and fraying. Go all the way around each tooth–don’t forget to floss behind the back molars! This should only take about 2-3 minutes per day.

Mouthwash: If you choose to add a mouthwash (also called mouthrinse) to your hygiene routine, make sure it is actually an effective one. There are two kinds of mouthwash–therapeutic and cosmetic.  Choose a therapeutic mouthwash rather than a cosmetic one. Cosmetic mouthwashes freshen breath temporarily. Therapeutic mouthwashes do more than simply freshen breath; they actually kill the bacteria that cause halitosis, as well as cleaning your mouth. Some are even formulated to whiten teeth or fight tartar.
