If you had to name the strongest substance in your body, would you pick your tooth enamel? If you said yes, you would be right. But while it is the toughest substance in the body, it can still be compromised. And, once it’s gone, it’s gone. And it does not grow back, so you need to protect it.

Your tooth enamel may look smooth, but in fact it is covered in microscopic holes. Certain substances can attack the enamel and even increase the size of those holes. Eventually, this can lead to tooth decay and even and infection in your tooth. One of the biggest dangers to your tooth enamel is acid. Acid is present in many of the foods you eat and the things you drink. However, acid can most often be formed when the bacteria found in the plaque on your teeth uses the sugars from your diet to create it.

To keep your enamel healthy, our dentist, Dr. Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz, recommends limiting your intake of sugary, and acidic foods and drinks, and foods that are heavy in starches. You should brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, and floss at least once a day. Fluoride can’t help you regrow your enamel. As we said earlier, enamel can’t grow back. But fluoride can strengthen the enamel you have. Using a toothpaste with fluoride, and drinking fluoridated water can be two good ways to get the fluoride you need.
